„I did it again / i told you that i wouldn`t / i couldn`t / cause you`re my friend“, heißt es im vorwärts polternden “I’m A Bridge”, und es ist beeindruckend, dass all diese verschiedenen Facetten zu ein und derselben Person gehören.

Entrevista: Outside The Box

Podes apresentar os Outside The Box?

No meu Top 5 estão The Band, Wilco, The Hold Steady, Counting Crows e Bruce.

Outside the Box will perform The Band’s ‘The Last Waltz’ on its 35th anniversary at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ on Friday, November 25.
‘The Last Waltz’, The Band’s farewell performance from November 25, 1976 at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, was made into one of the most highly regarded rock films of all-time, directed by Martin Scorsese. The Band, who consisted of Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel and Robbie Robertson were joined by an all-star group of musicians that night including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Ron Wood, Ronnie Hawkins,The Staples and many more throughout ‘The Last Waltz’ performance.

Leading up to Thanksgiving, Outside the Box has teamed-up with WindMill Gourmet Fast Food and Sixpoint Craft Ale for a turkey drive supporting the non-profit organization, Move For Hunger. Each person who brings in a frozen turkey to a participating WindMill restaurant will receive a pair of complimentary tickets to the Outside the Box performance on November 25 as well as a WindMill hot dog. The turkeys that are collected will be donated to Move For Hunger for families of Monmouth County, NJ.

“’The Last Waltz’ was the first concert film I ever saw”, said Outside the Box lead singer Jeff Cafone. “Mark (Masefield) and I bonded over the movie before we started OTB in 2004. We used to act out the performances, interviews, and personality quirks of the guests even before we could perform the music. It is an honor to be performing ‘The Last Waltz’ on its 35th Anniversary and pay homage to the band that is largely responsible for the existence of OTB – The Band.”

Outside the Box will open the show with songs off of their debut album, ‘Bridge’, released in July 2011.

‘Bridge’ has already received rave reviews:

The Aquarian’s John Pfeifer wrote: “While retaining that dirty Jersey vibe, (‘Bridge’) rocks with the rebellious spirit of Graham Parsons and Elvis Costello.”

The Star Ledger’s Jay Lustig wrote: “Bridge,” highlighted by “Love Is the Villain,” a song whose driving energy and hint of a snarl reminds me, more than anything else, of early Graham Parker (though you can hear traces of Petty and Costello and Dylan in there as well).”

Chris Rotolo from the Asbury Park Press said: “(Bridge) has monstrous melodies and choruses that will be engrained in the minds and on the tips of tongues of Jersey Shore beach combers for years to come.”

The JerseyBeat.com called ‘Bridge’: “a winning surplus of raw energy, sturdy musicianship, and positively infectious go-for enthusiasm…a totally kick-ass album”.

Rich Robinson from 90.5 FM “The Night” said: “Some of the most amazing musicians that the Jersey Shore has come out with in a long, long time.”

The album is available on itunes, www.outsidetheboxband.com or at Jack’s Music Shoppe in Red Bank, NJ.

Outside The Box is a New Jersey band that follows in the footsteps of their city-by-the-shore idols. They embrace the sounds of Bruce Springsteen, John Eddie, Southside Johnny, and they do it to the letter. But they also display a flair for mixing blues, pop and rough and tumble rock and roll into their personal sound. Their current record, Bridge, was produced by keyboardist and Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes member Jeff Kazee for Schaeffer Records.

The group released Bridge this summer to rave reviews and growing audiences from here to California. This is a band that is not content to sit on their hands and wait for fame to find them. They go out hunting for it. Recently featured as guest DJs on Sirius Radio’s E Street Show, they’ve been touted by all forms of press. But that shouldn’t be the main focus here. What I pay attention to is the band’s sound and the continuing musical development that they display.

Songs like “Love Is The Villian” stand out far from the common shore comparisons. While retaining that dirty Jersey vibe, it rocks with the rebellious spirit of Graham Parsons and Elvis Costello. Cafone’s raw and gritty vocal brings me back to the ‘80s when bands like John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown rubbed musical elbows with the likes of Bill Chinook and Norman Nardini.

Other standouts include the heavy backbeat dynamics of “I’m A Bridge.” Outside The Box reins it in here, down-stroking power guitars before releasing their combined musical fusion into the song’s bluesy bridge. Single line leads scream and wail pushing the B3 magic of Mark Masfield way out there. The production of Jeff Kazee is outstanding on this disc and just goes to show you what a band can accomplish when they listen to a musician with this level of experience.

“The Ballad Of Jackie Chan” bounces with an interesting Cars-meets-Graham Parker And The Rumour feel. Tight and tempered backing vocals make way for Cafone’s seething tone and lyrical delivery. The song thunders into the choruses as drummer Francis Valentino really drives this complex and instant classic home.

“So Confused” comes out of the reverb deep side of the gene pool, breaking into an anathematic chorus supported by that familiar Jersey organ blitzkrieg while the band lays down sizzling chord changes, drum patterns and overall support for Cafone’s melodic lines. Honest and passionate, I can see why this band has been instantly adopted by the guys that started the sound back in the day.

All in all, Bridge has 11 tunes that should appeal to the Bruce crowd and beyond. Like I said, Outside The Box embraces the shore sound and it shows in their music. But they also have the smarts not to put all their eggs in that proverbial basket. Bridgestands on its own musically, and that’s a success in my book.
